Forensic Structural Investigations
Forensic Structural Investigations
Clear, evidence-based investigation of structural damage, defects and failures. When damage or failure affects a building or structure, understanding what happened is essential before decisions can be made about repair, responsibility or further action.
Our forensic structural engineers investigate the cause, nature and extent of structural issues affecting residential, commercial and other buildings. We combine engineering judgement, site evidence and specialist testing to provide clear findings and practical advice.
Our team brings experience from hundreds of seismic and post-earthquake assessments, along with investigations into retaining wall failures, foundation movement, design and construction issues, building defects, natural-hazard damage and the adequacy of previous repairs.
Where additional expertise is needed, Kirk Roberts’ multidisciplinary teams and trusted technical specialists can contribute to a coordinated investigation.
Our services include
Forensic assessment of structural damage, defects and failures
Earthquake, liquefaction and other natural-hazard damage assessments
Investigation of retaining wall, foundation and settlement issues
Review of design, construction and previous repair work
Detailed structural inspections and evidence review
Coordination of appropriate testing and specialist investigations
Clear reporting on findings, limitations and recommended next steps
Advice on repair strategies, remediation or further expert input
Investigation methods may include
The methods used will depend on the building, available evidence and the questions that need to be answered.
- Geotechnical testing and ground assessments
- Cavity surveys using drones, remote-access equipment or endoscopes
- 3D scanning, modelling and photographic overlays
- Ground-penetrating radar and reinforcement scanning
- Building and weathertightness inspections
- Asbestos, mould and borer identification
- Concrete sampling and testing
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Forensic Structural Investigations
When should I request a forensic structural investigation?
An investigation may be appropriate when the cause or extent of cracking, movement, damage, defects or structural failure is unclear, disputed or needs to be understood before repair decisions are made.
What information should I provide?
Useful information may include drawings, engineering reports, consent records, photographs, repair documentation, insurance information and a timeline of when the issue was first observed. We will confirm what is relevant to the investigation.
Will specialist testing always be required?
Not always. We select investigation methods according to the issue and available evidence. Where testing or specialist input is needed, we will explain why and agree the scope before proceeding.
Can the investigation support a claim or dispute?
Yes. A forensic investigation can provide evidence for a claim or dispute. If independent expert witness advice is required, this can be discussed separately and will be subject to the appropriate engagement and conflict-check process.
If you need to understand the cause or extent of damage to a building or structure, contact our Forensic Structural Investigations team to discuss the most appropriate investigation.
