Our Christchurch team recently had the opportunity to volunteer at Ōtākaro Orchard, a hidden gem in the CBD dedicated to sustainable urban agriculture. Guided by project coordinator Roz Rolls, we explored the flourishing food garden and the innovative new building along Cambridge Terrace.

Our main task was creating earth bricks for the building’s interior walls. Using a mix of locally sourced clay, sand, and shredded paper, we worked together to produce 28 bricks in just three hours. It was a hands-on, rewarding experience that underscored the importance of sustainable practices”, says Tara Keogh, who is a part of the Kirk Roberts Employee Committee, that drives social events and team activities across the company.

Ōtākaro Orchard is a pioneer in sustainable building practices, as highlighted by their innovative use of natural, non-toxic, and renewable materials. The building’s design maximizes sunlight energy through solar panels, which operate efficiently thanks to the cool environment created by the green roof. This energy is stored in the underground heating system and the thermal mass of the concrete slab and earth brick walls, slowly releasing warmth into the environment.

We highly recommend getting involved with Ōtākaro Orchard. Roz is a passionate educator, and volunteers of all ages are welcome. For more information, visit their Facebook page or follow them on Instagram @otakaro_orchard.
