When Do You Need A Fire Report For Your Development?

“Engaging an experienced fire engineer at an early stage of a project can make a significant difference to the project outcome. We provide clear fire safety design requirements, practical construction-ready advice, and cost-effective solutions that give you and the wider project team confidence in the proposed fire strategy before building consent is lodged, helping to streamline the design, approval, and construction process.

Also early fire engineer involvement helps identify potential issues before they become costly problems and supports value engineering by developing practical, compliant, and cost-effective fire engineering solutions. These benefits contribute to a smoother design, consent, and construction process, reducing the risk of delays, costly design changes, and inefficient on-site construction solutions.”

Herman Fong, Fire Team Leader Auckland.

At Kirk Roberts, our Fire Engineering team works alongside architects, designers, builders and developers to provide practical fire engineering advice and fire reports that support the building consent process. If you’re unsure whether your project requires a fire report, we’re happy to help.

Complete our online Fire Report Request Form  to submit your project details, and our Fire Engineering team will review your enquiry and contact you to discuss the next steps.

Advanced fire and evacuation modelling to optimise design and improve building performance.

For clients, this means:

  • Greater design flexibility, particularly for complex or non-standard buildings
  • The ability to optimise layouts and fire protection systems
  • Potential cost savings by avoiding overly conservative design assumptions and Prescribed design solutions
  • Performance-based fire design and modelling, undertaken and approved by our experienced fire engineers, provides equivalent confidence in meeting New Zealand Building Code requirements.

This approach is particularly valuable for projects such as:

  • Buildings with multi-level atrium spaces
  • Shopping centres and large retail environments
  • Auditoriums, theatres, and event centres
  • High-bay warehouses outside standard design limits
  • High-occupancy buildings with complex evacuation requirements

By combining FDS with Pathfinder evacuation modelling, we can also simulate how people move through a building during an emergency—supporting safer, more informed design decisions where simplified calculations are no longer sufficient.

As part of our performance-based fire engineering offering, these tools enable us to deliver smarter, more efficient solutions that balance safety, compliance, and design intent. Engaging fire engineering early can unlock opportunities to optimise your project, talk to our team to learn more.
