New World Green Bay has been a fixture in the local community for the past 52 years and is one of the oldest New Worlds in New Zealand. With the original store structure dating back to the 1960s, the store no longer met Foodstuffs seismic standards and was well overdue a revamp.
Our Structural team offered review of this Foodstuffs store and its probable structural seismic performance. Due to the identified structural deficiencies, we provided a cost-effective design for strengthening of the existing store and new extension construction, which included 50% of the original structural and 50% new. Providing cost-effective structural engineering solutions at the pre-resource consent stage allowed our clients to proceed with the project within budget.
The challenge was to strengthen the original structure while ensuring the store remained fully operational during the demolition, reconstruction, and extension construction. We implemented smart and cost-effective engineering solutions which allowed for seismic strengthening of the existing store by constructing the new proposed extension structure.
“To put it simply, the new structure compensates for the old,” Says Jan Jober, Kirk Roberts Consulting Principal Structural Engineer, “this was an economical solution which allowed the store to remain fully operation during the 11-month rebuild – an incredible accomplishment really.”
In addition, our structural team was supported by Kirk Roberts – Geotechnical and Environmental disciplines providing effective “in house” coordination and foundation designs.
We provided innovative, economic and timely solutions to support Foodstuffs North Island with the redevelopment of this Green Bay community asset. The store re-opened in December 2022. “It’s really special to now be able to provide the community with a brand-new store that’s been designed, configured and stocked based on their unique needs,” says Jamie Brear, New World Green Bay store owner/operator.
