Karaka CHT Care Home, Auckland

CHT Karaka is a 7,468 m², 60-bed residential care facility in south Auckland designed to support residents across different stages of care. This development completed in 2026 includes a rest home, hospital and dementia care, care suites, ancillary facilities, car parking and landscaped outdoor areas.

Kirk Roberts provided civil engineering and construction monitoring services from concept design and resource consent through to detailed design and construction.

Our work on CHT Karaka demonstrates the importance of experienced civil engineering in aged care developments, where accessible movement, reliable infrastructure, effective stormwater management and a safe, resilient site must all support the needs of residents, staff and visitors.

Civil engineering within an evolving subdivision

A key challenge was that the wider Karaka subdivision had not been completed when design began. The final levels of the surrounding land were not yet established on site, creating uncertainty around finished site levels and the flood risks that needed to be managed.

Our civil engineers coordinated reports and design information for the wider subdivision to determine the proposed finished levels and associated flood levels. This enabled the design and construction of CHT Karaka to progress ahead of surrounding land parcels.

Integrated civil and stormwater design

The care facility, car parking and other hardstand areas created a significant amount of impervious surface, requiring both stormwater attenuation and retention.

Kirk Roberts developed a stormwater solution that met consent requirements while minimising the effects of the development on the surrounding environment. Our detailed design and documentation also covered wastewater and water-supply infrastructure, private drainage, accessible routes and hardstand areas, earthworks, and erosion and sediment control.

Through early involvement and careful coordination, Kirk Roberts helped establish the civil infrastructure required to support a modern, accessible aged care facility for the growing Karaka community.
