Kirk Roberts were engaged to provide environmental and structural engineering support for the demolition and redevelopment of Greymouth Hospital, Te Nikau Hospital.

There was significant asbestos sub-floor contamination, complicating the demolition of the old hospital. Our teams worked closely with the main contractor and stakeholders to develop demolition methodologies that ensured safe management, remediation, and encapsulation of contaminated materials.

By developing specific demolition processes and earthwork sequencing, we were successfully able to assist the client in providing cost-effective soil management, which involve a combination of specifically-designed contamination containment cells for long-term management, and off-site landfill disposal.

With significant experience in seismic strengthen and review, our structural team also provided support through compliance disputes during construction. Our expertise in this area and collaboration with contractors and the client, meant we were able to provide pragmatic solutions ensuring the defects could be quickly resolved, avoiding ongoing delays in construction.

The 8500 square metre building, adjacent to the current Grey Base Hospital, includes 56 in-patient beds, three operating theatres and a new integrated family health centre. It houses a 24/7 emergency department, critical care unit, acute and planned medical and surgical services, maternity services, radiology, laboratory services, paediatrics and outpatient care.

The Greymouth Hospital, Te Nikau, is now complete and is the largest medical, health care provider in the West Coast region.
