Multidisciplinary Engineering for Industrial Infrastructure

Kirk Roberts Consulting has partnered with Fulton Hogan to deliver multidisciplinary engineering services for multiple asphalt plant developments across the North Island, supporting the expansion of critical industrial infrastructure. These projects demonstrate our ability to deliver geotechnical and structural engineering solutions for complex, programme-driven industrial facilities.

Engineering for Asphalt Plant Development in New Zealand

Our Kirk Roberts team was engaged to provide geotechnical and structural engineering services for asphalt plant developments in both Hamilton and Drury (Auckland). These facilities form part of Fulton Hogan’s broader North Island rollout, requiring robust, efficient design solutions that align with operational demands, site constraints, and tight construction programmes.

Structural Engineering for Industrial Plant Infrastructure

Our structural engineers were responsible for the design of asphalt plant foundations and key structural components across both projects.

The first of the new asphalt plants was constructed in Hamilton, with the plant being manufactured overseas, requiring careful coordination to meet New Zealand certification and compliance requirements. Kirk Roberts undertook a detailed peer review of the structural design, ensuring the imported plant met local standards/local authority requirements and could be safely integrated into the site. This work established a clear pathway for adapting imported industrial plant infrastructure to New Zealand conditions, setting the foundation for future sites across the programme.

Building on this approach, our role in Drury focused on delivering foundation designs for the new plant working closely with Auckland Council to secure both resource and building consents. This ensured the project could progress smoothly within the regulatory environment, supporting timely delivery of the second plant.

Geotechnical Engineering and Ground Solutions

Across both sites, our geotechnical team undertook site assessments, data reviews, and ground investigations to inform foundation design and construction planning.

In Hamilton, early-stage geotechnical design included a ground improvement solution. However, due to programme constraints and commissioning timelines, this approach was no longer viable. Working closely with Fulton Hogan, our team developed an alternative foundation solution that aligned with the project timeframe while maintaining an appropriate risk profile.

In Drury, our scope included reviewing existing regional and site data, managing targeted investigations, and developing foundation and ground improvement strategies to support the operational requirements of a new plant within the Stevenson Quarry.

Construction Monitoring and Delivery

We provided construction monitoring services across both projects, covering ground improvement works and structural construction. This ensured quality, compliance, and alignment with design intent throughout delivery.

A Trusted Partner for Industrial Projects

These projects represent the first and second stages of Fulton Hogan’s asphalt plant expansion across the North Island, with Kirk Roberts continuing as a trusted engineering partner.

Our involvement highlights our ability to deliver:

  • Multidisciplinary engineering for industrial facilities
  • Adaptation of imported plant for New Zealand compliance
  • Flexible design solutions under programme pressure
  • Geotechnical and structural integration for complex sites
  • Compliance support for imported industrial plant

Together, these projects demonstrate our experience in delivering efficient, buildable, and compliant engineering solutions for large-scale industrial infrastructure across New Zealand.

These projects demonstrate Kirk Roberts’ ability to deliver practical, programme-focused engineering solutions, supporting the growth of critical industrial infrastructure across New Zealand
