Previously known as West Plaza or the ‘Crown Jewel of Auckland’, our structural and geotechnical engineering teams were engaged to support the redevelopment of 1 Albert Street.
Category winner of Commercial Office Property Award 2023, the aero-foil-shaped building features a refined design that brings the original design concepts to the foreground once again. The modernisation of this commercial space celebrates the classical elegance of this heritage building.
Challenge: A new entrance
The lower levels of the building needed significant engineering to help 1 Albert Street regain its iconic Auckland building status. Part of this was the relocation of the main entrance from Albert Street to Fanshawe Street and the development of a new lobby. The whole building required updating to meet today’s seismic requirements.

Our teams provided a detailed seismic assessment of the full building (DSA), along with structural solutions bringing it in line with today’s seismic requirements. We worked collaboratively with the client on the proposed seismic strengthening of the superstructure allowing the architectural designers from Ignite to work on the new entrance and lobby, creating a refreshed welcome for visitors of 1 Albert Street.
